Description

Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine and an official delegation inaugurated three newly discovered oil blocks in Agadem on Saturday.

"Our national hydrocarbons company (Sonidep) is officially starting its upstream oil activities as a national operator on the Agadem R5, 6 and 7 blocks," said Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine, Prime Minister of Niger. "This is undoubtedly a moment of great national pride, paving the way for the development of Niger's expertise in oil exploration and production".

Footage shows Prime Minister Zeine, along with officials from the national oil company Sonidep, inspecting a manifold in the area and unveiling a commemorative plaque to mark the inauguration.

"From hydrocarbon importer then to a partner of the Societe de refineries de Zinder (Soraz) in the marketing of refined petroleum products, our national company (Sonidep) is now embarking on the exploration and exploitation of oil and gas," explained Zeine. "This is a major challenge that requires seriousness, integrity and professionalism on the part of this company, but it also requires the support of all our compatriots to ensure that Niger's flag flies at the major meetings of oil and gas producers".

"For this project to be successful and sustainable, it is essential to include a local content policy. Sonidep intends to implement the local content policy advocated by the highest authorities, i.e. the use of local labour and the participation of national companies in oil and gas activities," said Colonel Ali Seybou Hassan, Managing Director of Sonidep. "This is a challenge that aims to enhance the technical and economic capabilities of these local companies, as well as the qualifications of the workforce".

According to the local authorities, 38 of the region's 43 oil wells will soon be exploitable and will be explored by Sonidep.
