"We are commemorating the memory of George Floyd today. We are honouring the life of George Floyd today, but we are also honouring the lives of New Yorkers that have been killed by the NYPD," said Raymond Phillips, the protest organiser.
Protesters chanted and held signs in favour of police reform, demanding investment in their local communities.
"The safest communities in the city of New York have the least amount of cops," said Antonio Reinosa, a NYC Council Member. "But what they have the most of is high-quality education; they have the best hospitals; they've got the best housing; they got the most jobs; they got the most parks," he added.
On May 25, 2020, George Floyd died after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin pinned him to the ground with a knee on his neck for more than nine minutes. Chauvin was convicted in April of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter following a three-week trial. Three other former officers are still awaiting trial in the case.
