Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council chairman Chiu Chui-cheng accused Beijing of having 'gradually intensified coercive pressure' on Taipei following the detainment of a Taiwanese fishing crew and vessel by Chinese authorities on Tuesday. This was said during press conference held in Taipei on Thursday.

"We hope that the relevant Chinese authorities can quickly announce the facts of the incident and, according to the relevant regulations and procedures, release our people and vessels while ensuring their safety," he said in a press conference in Taipei on Thursday.

Chiu also stated that Beijing's threats to Taiwanese people's rights to freedom and democracy was the 'root cause of cross-strait tensions and regional instability.'

"We often see unlicensed or unregistered and unnamed Chinese fishing boats entering our waters to fish. When they can't fish there, they come here to fish. Therefore, our country also disagrees with Chinese fishing boats crossing the border to fish," he added.

The Taiwanese official also warned others to be 'vigilant when participating in activities in China’, adding that "they should be aware of the potential political motives behind these activities and abide by cross-strait regulations. They should pay attention to social perceptions and avoid becoming a model for the CCP's united front tactics."

According to local media reports, the Penghu fishing vessel 'Da Jin Man No. 88' was alleged to have been forcibly boarded and detained by a Chinese coast guard ship, with both crew and vessel taken back to Beijing for investigation.

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Mao Ning said on a press conference on Wednesday that Beijing does not have any further details or statements in regards to the incident.

Beijing views Taiwan as part of its territory under the 'One China' principle, while the island has never officially declared independence.
