'Log lift' athlete Cheick Ahmed Al-Hassan Sanou, also known as 'Iron Biby', received a hero's welcome in Ouagadougou on Thursday after setting a new world record.
Footage shows Biby celebrating in a motorcade parade as residents greeted and cheered him on. The athlete was also seen posing with his trophy while attending a meeting with Burkinabe Minister of Communication and Culture Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo and Minister for Sport Roland Somda.
"My personal goal was to be world champion five times, and what happens after that is gratifying," Biby said. "To achieve this record, I had the people and the authorities behind me."
He also said he felt 'intense' pressure to perform well after sustaining an injury a week before the competition but added: "the greater the risk, the harder I work."
"I haven't finished yet, I need to reach 240 kg! I'm very spiritual myself! I'm going to keep working hard and hit at the right moment," he continued.
Burkina Faso native Biby set a new record at the 2024 Giants Live World Tour Finals in Birmingham on Saturday, September 7. He lifted a log weighing 231 kg (509 lb), surpassing the world record he previously set the year before with a 230-kilogram (507-pound) lift.
