Description

A 71-year-old coal-fired combined heat and power plant was demolished in a controlled blast in China's Zhengzhou in northern Henan province last week, as spectators watched from a safe distance.

Footage captured the demolition of the thermal power plant located in the Zhengzhou, the capital of central China's Henan Province on June 25.

The plant's three 210-meter-high chimneys and three 105-meter-high cooling towers were demolished, which had been built with the assistance of the former Soviet Union in 1953.

Prior to its retirement in 2019, the Zhengzhou Xinli Electric Power Co. facility delivered 1 gigawatt of power to the city each year, as well as 60 per cent of the Zhengzhou's central heating supply.

Demolition of the plant is part of China's policy toward sustainable growth, with the carbon-intensive generating capacity of its coal-fired units being replaced on the grid by wind and solar power.

The land on which the power plant stood will be repurposed into a residential area, according to local media.
