Iranian officials honoured the late President Ebrahim Raisi in Tehran on Tuesday during the first National Assembly of Experts meeting since the leader's death.

"We offer our condolences to those who have passed before us and on top of them is the honourable character, Ayatollah Raisi, the popular president of our country," said the President of Iran’s National Assembly of Experts, Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Movahedi Kermani.

Footage shows members of the assembly as well as foreign guests attending the session. Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was also seen participating in the meeting. Meanwhile, Raisi's portrait can be seen placed on his chair.

Kermani also congratulated members for attending the session.

"Ask God to help you fulfil your duties well in this dangerous period," he advised the crowd.

Raisi served as the South Khorasan representative in the assembly. Representative of the Iranian supreme leader to East Azerbaijan Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Al-Hashem, who also died in the helicopter crash, served as the representative of Tabriz.

The Assembly of Experts is responsible for overseeing the activities of Iran's Supreme Leader and selecting the next leader. The assembly comprises 88 members, each serving an eight-year term. Members are elected by the Iranian people through direct voting.

The Iranian president, his Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and others were confirmed dead by state media and officials after their helicopter came down in the mountains of northern Iran during heavy fog on Sunday. No official cause has been reported at time of publication.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared five days of national mourning. First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will take over as acting president for an interim period, with elections scheduled after 50 days. Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani becomes acting foreign minister.

Global leaders, including those from Russia, India, Iraq, Syria, Egypt and other nations extended their condolences. Raisi, a conservative cleric closely associated with the Supreme Leader, was elected in 2021.
