Hundreds of residents of Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip gathered outside a bakery, hoping to purchase a bundle of bread, which typically weighs a kilogram and contains 10 loaves.
Footage filmed on Friday shows residents of all ages queuing outside the entrance of Al-Qalaa Bakery. The crowd is so dense that people are standing very close to each other.
The residents shared that they wait for hours before they can get a loaf of bread.
"We wait for long hours - three or four hours - just to obtain a bundle of bread, yet it's not sufficient for my family. The suffering is severe as I am a blind person with special needs," Tawfiq Shubeir said.
Another resident, Abu Tamer Daraz, shared, "After doing the Fajr prayer at home, I leave so that I may acquire a bundle of bread. I went to the bakery yesterday, but because of the serious crisis, I didn't obtain the bread. My four kids and I returned home without anything. I returned today to get bread, but, as you can see, the situation is dire, and we are trying very hard to get bread."
A representative of the Al-Qalaa Bakery, Mahmoud Abu Salim, said that they 'face many difficulties' as previously flour deliveries into Gaza were possible on a daily basis, unlike these days.
"Therefore, we insist that crossings be opened. It is imperative that the crossings be opened and that flour be sufficiently supplied to the bakers daily; otherwise, we will face a famine similar to the one in the north," he continued.
Since the beginning of the conflict, Gazan people have been experiencing severe food shortages, which have worsened in recent weeks due to Israeli officials reducing the number of working days at the Karam Abu Salem crossing, which is the main entry point for humanitarian aid into Gaza.
The crossing has only been open for a few days in October, which makes it one of the months with the least amount of aid reaching Gaza since the start of the conflict, according to media reports.
The Hamas-Israel conflict broke out after Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023. The attack resulted in the death of 1,139 people, most of them civilians, and more than 200 were taken captive in the Gaza Strip.
In the enclave, the Israeli military conducted a major operation involving air strikes and ground assaults, resulting in the death of at least 42,847 Palestinians and the injury of more than 100,544, according to reports at the time of publication.
