Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov was seen telling a crypto conference in Dubai in April that his platform cared strongly about freedom, after news emerged that he had been detained in France on Saturday evening.

"We at Telegram love blockchain," he told the forum in archive footage taken on April 19, 2024. "The reason we love blockchain is the technology of freedom. We care about freedom. Even our logo, the paper airplane, symbolises freedom to move in three dimensions. Freedom to communicate privately. Freedom to express yourselves publicly."

He went on to describe how he believed Telegram stood apart from other platforms.

"We don't use your personal data to target ads. We don't sell your personal data to advertisers. All our ads are context-based. Second, we never prevent the direct link between a content creator, a community leader, an app, and the user. We will not clutter it with algorithms. And third, we believe in sharing. Telegram is different because we understand that all our success, all our popularity is because of you," he added.

Durov also told the event that 'previous concepts' of social media that was 'almost like a digital slavery should be over'.

"This may not make much sense in terms of commercial interest of Telegram, but we think it makes a lot of sense in terms of the moral aspect of this entire operation," he said.

Durov was detained at Le Bourget airport in France on Saturday, 24 August. On Monday, French prosecutors confirmed that they detained Durov 'in the context' of an investigation involving child pornography, drug trafficking and financial transactions. His detention was extended until Wednesday, August 28.

President Emmanuel Macron claimed it was 'in no way a political decision'. The Ministries of Foreign Affairs in Russia and the UAE called on France to urgently provide their citizen with access to consular support.

Earlier, Telegram claimed that its 39-year-old CEO had 'nothing to hide and that its 'moderation is within industry standards and constantly improving'. "It is absurd to claim that a platform or its owner are responsible for abuse of that platform," the statement continued. The platform reportedly has around one billion users.
