Description

Students from rival groups were seen clashing at a pro-Palestinian protest camp at UCLA in Los Angeles, with some shown chanting 'pigs go home' as police moved in during the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Footage shows hooded activists descending on the camp with sticks and attempting to remove the barricades, before fighting with those inside the camp.

Riot police can be seen surrounding the site following the clashes, as well as tear gas being deployed and protesters being treated for the effects.

Media outlets reported that pro-Israel supporters were trying to break up the camp. It came as university officials also moved in to take down tents after delivering an ultimatum to the pro-Palestinian protesters.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called the violence 'absolutely abhorrent and inexcusable'.

It came hours after police cleared a sit-in protest in support of Palestine at a building at Columbia University in New York. Similar pro-Palestine protests, sparked by action at Columbia University, have seen camps formed on university campuses, with organisers calling on the faculties to cut ties with Israeli companies amid the ongoing war in Gaza.
