The Ministry of Defence of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) released footage of a military funeral service at the Al Bateen Airport in Abu Dhabi on Sunday for four soldiers who were killed in an attack in Somalia.
The UAE’s State News Agency reported the arrival of an Armed Forces military aircraft carrying the bodies of four slain military personnel, Colonel Mohamed Mansouri, warrant officer Mohammed Al Shamsi, warrant officer Khalifa al-baloushi, and Sergent Sulieman al-Shahi.
Earlier, the Ministry of Defence had announced the death of an officer from the Bahrain Defence Force and three personnel of the UAE Armed Forces, and the injury of two others, one of whom died of his injuries after being attacked in the Republic of Somalia.
The soldiers were reportedly attacked while performing training duties with the Somali Armed Forces, as part of an agreement between the UAE and the African nation.
"The UAE continues to coordinate and cooperate with the Somali government in investigating the vicious terrorist act," the statement said.
According to the Somali News Agency (SUNA), Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud expressed his condolences to the UAE and condemned the attack, calling for an immediate investigation into the incident.
Somalia has been waging war on Harakat al-Shabaab al-Mujahideen, who share ideological ties with al-Qaeda. The group, founded in 2004, have claimed responsibility for many operations which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people.
