Description

The Shejaiya neighbourhood in Gaza reportedly came under unexpected Israeli artillery and air strikes on Thursday, forcing residents to flee the area.

"Without any warning, they suddenly fire shells, planes, tanks and cannons at people. This is injustice and a crime in itself. We get tired," claimed a local. "I risk going to the Shujaiya neighbourhood to get firewood so that I can feed my children. When I get there, I find that the shells are falling over our heads. Is it not enough that they have been denying us food, drink and supplies".

Footage shows residents fleeing with family members, carrying their belongings on foot, in cars or on horse-drawn carriages. Displaced people can also be seen helping relatives in wheelchairs or assisting them to walk.

"The Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital is out of service and only receives injured people. My daughter has a broken foot and we can't find anyone to provide her with any assistance," said a displaced mother with her daughter. "We have no idea [where to go]; We have already suffered, her house was demolished - and my house was destroyed as well".

"How did we end up here? I was making food for the kids to eat and drink, and then the shelling began, with rockets and shells falling above our heads. We came out, thanks to God," said another displaced local. "We don't know how we got out; they didn't warn us or even throw evacuation leaflets".

The Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that dozens of people were allegedly killed and injured when Israeli tanks overran the neighbourhood amid heavy shelling, displacing many Palestinian families.

Earlier today, the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza claimed that the Israeli army had carried out three 'massacres' of families in the Gaza Strip, killing 47 people and injuring 52 others in the last 24 hours. Some victims remain trapped under the rubble, and ambulance crews and civil defence workers are currently carrying out rescue operations.

It was also reported that on Thursday the IDF called on residents of the Shujaiya area, the new neighbourhoods, Turkmen and Tuffah to evacuate 'immediately' south to the humanitarian area on Salah al-Din Street.

The war between Israel and Hamas broke out after the Palestinian group launched an unprecedented attack on northern Israel on October 7, killing 1,139 people and kidnapping more than 200 others, mostly civilians.

In turn, Israel launched a full-scale campaign of airstrikes and ground incursions, killing at least 37,765 Palestinians and injuring more than 86,429 others as of the time of publication.
