Social media influencer Andrew Tate condemned the detention of Telegram founder Pavel Durov as he and his brother Tristan arrived at a Romanian court in Bucharest on Wednesday.

"Anybody who stands up against government, anybody who speaks the truth about corruption, anybody who has a voice online, who highlights how all of our money has been stolen from the taxpayer, ends up in a garbage case against them. I want to say, it's very clear, you need to make it very clear that Pavel [Durov, CEO of Telegram] has done absolutely nothing wrong," he stated.

"He's the one who tells the truth, anybody who's talked against government ends up with a criminal case. Don't you think that's suspicious?"

Tate himself was placed under house arrest following a raid on his home last week, which he called a 'set up' and accused the media of being 'complicit'

The brothers were among six detained when the country's anti-organised crime prosecuting unit DIICOT searched four properties. The new charges related to the six include "forming an organised criminal group, human trafficking, trafficking of minors, sexual intercourse with a minor and money laundering."

Andrew and Tristan were first arrested in December 2022 in Bucharest. That earlier indictment included "human trafficking, rape and forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women". Both brothers strongly deny all of the charges against them.

Durov was detained at Le Bourget airport in France on Saturday, 24 August. On Monday, French prosecutors confirmed that they detained Durov 'in the context' of an investigation involving child pornography, drug trafficking and financial transactions. His detention was extended until Wednesday, August 28.

President Emmanuel Macron claimed it was 'in no way a political decision'. The Ministries of Foreign Affairs in Russia and the UAE called on France to urgently provide their citizen with access to consular support.

Earlier, Telegram claimed that its 39-year-old CEO had 'nothing to hide and that its 'moderation is within industry standards and constantly improving'. "It is absurd to claim that a platform or its owner are responsible for abuse of that platform," the statement continued. The platform reportedly has around one billion users.
