Christians in Lebanon observed Good Friday with a re-enactment of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ in the town of Al-Qarya.
Footage shows members of the Parish of St. Grace and the Marian Brotherhood walking in procession while an actor playing Jesus carries a cross from a church courtyard into the surrounding hills.
“People come to this tradition from all the villages surrounding the area,” said event organiser, Mario Tannous. “We are pursuing this tradition in cooperation with the fraternity youth, under the auspices of our father Tony Chalhoub.”
“This tradition affects us a lot, given that it has been re-enacted since the days of our ancestors, it is a tradition of our village and each year I play the role of Christ, trying to experience some pain in order to repent my sins,” said participant, Anthony Daibes.
Good Friday is observed by Christians worldwide and marks the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary.
