The aftermath of a strike on Iran's consulate building - next to the country's embassy - in Damascus was seen on Monday.

Footage shows smoke rising from the site, with the ruins of the official building, heavy machinery clearing debris, and locals and emergency workers assessing the damage.

Iran stated that it held Israel responsible, while Tehran's ambassador to Damascus reported that between five and seven people had lost their lives - and that his country's response would be 'harsh'.

According to media outlets citing Iranian television, a senior commander in Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Mohammad Reza Zahedi was killed in the attack, while the ambassador was believed to have survived.

Israel said that it did not comment on foreign media reports.
