China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson condemned an unannounced visit to Taiwan by US Senator Ed Markey and other lawmakers, during a press briefing in Beijing on Monday.
"In disregard of China's solemn representations and firm opposition, US Senator Ed Markey and his entourage insisted on sneakily visiting the Taiwan region of China," said Wang Wenbin, after the senator’s entourage arrived in Taipei.
"[The trip is] blatantly violating the One-China principle and the provisions of the Three Sino-US Joint Communiques, violating China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and sending a seriously wrong signal to the separatist forces in Taiwan," he continued.
The US group is set to meet with Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen and Foreign Minister Joseph Wu. It comes less than two weeks after US Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s own visit to the island, which China warned repeatedly against, and promised would be met with 'counter-measures.'
Pelosi and her family were sanctioned by China, while Beijing conducted a series of military exercises around Taiwan. China regards the island as part of its territory, while Taipei has never officially declared independence.
