Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed he’s planning to attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics in February 2022, speaking at a virtual meeting with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on Wednesday.
"I am grateful to you for the invitation to attend this significant event. I would like to note that we invariably support each other on issues of international sports cooperation, including rejection of any attempts to politicise sports and the Olympic movement," Putin said.
The Russian leader also lauded the Sino-Russian relations, noting the increase in bilateral trade.
“We have already broken the record levels of the pre-pandemic [period] 2019. In the near future, as agreed, we will overcome the $200 billion mark,” he said.
In his turn, Xi said he was looking forward to Putin’s Beijing visit, adding he is ready "to go forward with you hand in hand, together, to open a new page in China-Russia relations in the post-pandemic period."
