Description

Hundreds of Muslims were seen gathering at Istanbul’s renowned Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque on Sunday morning to perform the Eid al-Adha prayer.

Footage shows the mosque crowded with worshippers who can be seen praying together, talking and walking around the compound.

"For us, performing Eid prayers at Hagia Sophia has become a family ritual. We come and perform our prayers here, then the children offer the gifts they receive at home to their peers and elders," said one local.

Another added: "I sincerely wish the Eid al-Adha of the whole Muslim world to be blessed with my sincerest wishes. I wish it to be auspicious. I celebrate the feast of our children and wish you many more healthy and happy holidays."

I wrote this one if needed: Eid al-Adha (Festival of Sacrifice), is one of the two major Islamic festivals. It commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God, before God provided a ram to sacrifice instead.

Traditionally, Muslims around the world celebrate by sacrificing an animal and distributing the meat among family, friends and the needy. This festival also marks the end of the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.
