The ceremony to light the Olympic flame at the Temple of Hera in Olympia, Monday, was heckled by protesters condemning the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

Protesters were heard shouting while ceremony participants dressed in ancient white tunics were sharing the Olympic flame. Security guards could be seen running in the background to halt the heckling.

Three protesters denouncing Chinese human rights abuses in Tibet and Hong Kong also reportedly tried to climb the fence around the ancient site, before being arrested by police an hour before the ceremony started.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there would be no long torch relay in Greece for the Winter Games, which are set to be held from 4 to 20 February 2022.
