During his stay in Rome on Thursday, Brazilian President Luis Inacio 'Lula' da Silva addressed the case of journalist Julian Assange.

"You know that I am a little outraged with the defenders of press freedom in the world. It is not possible for what is happening to happen. We have Assange, imprisoned because he denounced to the world the American spying. This citizen is in jail in England. He is going to be sent back to the United States, maybe even serving a life sentence, and I don't see any manifestation by the press in defense of freedom of the press. It is unbelievable! Not even the newspaper that published his story defends him. The name of this is called cowardice", the Brazilian leader declared.

Calling for the release of the Australian journalist, detained in London after he was forcibly removed from the Ecuadorian embassy in the British capital, Lula said that he is "outraged by the lack of solidarity with a journalist who is being victimised because he denounced what every journalist would like to denounce if he had received the news as he did,"

Lula arrived on Wednesday in Rome to meet with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and the Pope Francis.
