Description

Locals in the town of Feni on Thursday were seen attempting to escape the floodwaters after torrential rains hit southeast Bangladesh.

Footage shows some walking through the knee-deep waters, with others aboard rafts, boats and tractors during the evacuation. Several locals were also seen saving personal belongings.

Fued Hasan claimed that communication lines have been 'completely severed' with Pulgazi, Parashuram and Chagalnaya residents 'since yesterday', adding that "people are in a very bad condition because they cannot be rescued."

"Army or Border Guard Bangladesh who are coming here for rescue work are bringing small speed boats and boats. But due to lack of manpower and not enough speed boats, we are in a bad situation," he claimed.

Another added it is "difficult to rescue people from these places", adding that their condition was 'not good'.

"People are in a lot of trouble. We have not yet received any kind of support from the government. Make my situation so bad, we are not even getting food," he said.

According to media reports, around 300,000 people have been affected due to the flooding in Bangladesh as the country's flood forecasting and warning centre announced 11 rivers in the region had recorded water levels above the 'danger level' at the time of publication.

Local officials announced that government buildings and high schools have been converted to evacuation centres as more than 25,000 people are reported to be sheltering in the camps.
