00:48Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed confidence that 'the next set of constitutional laws will also be approved' at a State Duma meeting in Moscow on Monday after ratifying the treaties on the four regions joining the Russian Federation.
"I just want to join in this celebratory mood and congratulate the representatives of the four new constituent entities of the Russian Federation. I am sure that the next set of constitutional laws will also be approved," the Foreign Minister said.
State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin replied to the Foreign Minister that 'this is what everyone expected' from Lavrov.
"You are a diplomat, and diplomats always have [to act] between the lines, but everyone read what they needed to," the politician added.
The foreign minister countered: "It's not between [the lines], exactly, here at all."
Earlier, the Duma ratified the treaties on the incorporation of the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions into Russia as subjects of the country, which were signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin on 30 September.
According to Moscow, the move followed referenda in which people living in those areas exercised their right to self-determination and requested to join Russia.
Ukraine and its international allies condemned the move, calling it an annexation of Kiev’s sovereign territory.
