Description

German Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Andrea Sasse condemned on Monday the sentencing of Russian politician Vladimir Kara-Murza, who received 25 years in prison.

"We demand the immediate release of Vladimir Kara-Murza and, of course, all others who are also political prisoners," she said.

She added that "the trial against Vladimir Kara-Murza shows how the Russian judicial system is being used against him and many of his compatriots, and to what shocking extent repression has reached in Russia".

For her part, Beate Baron, a spokeswoman for Germany's Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Protection, said European countries were working on ways to avoid circumventing sanctions against Russia.

"The sanctions packages that the EU has adopted against Russia should of course have an effect, and this is the common goal of all," she said.

Sasse also commented on the emerging conflict in Sudan and called for both sides to negotiate a ceasefire.

"We call on both sides - once again very clearly - to lay down their arms immediately and start negotiations," she said.

Moscow City Court sentenced publicist and social activist Vladimir Kara-Murza to 25 years in a penal colony on Monday. He was found guilty of treason, spreading fake news about the Russian Armed Forces and participating in the activities of the Free Russia Foundation, an organisation officially termed 'undesirable' by the Ministry of Justice.

On April 22 2022, Moscow's Basmanny District Court ruled that opposition activist Kara-Murza be arrested on suspicion of spreading fake news about the Russian military campaign in Ukraine.

According to the Russian Investigation Committee, the suspected 'spread deliberately false information that the Russian Armed Forces bombed the residential areas, social infrastructure facilities in Ukraine and on the use of other prohibited means and methods of warfare' during his speech at Arizona’s State Legislature lower chamber on March 15.

In July 2022, the journalist was charged under Article 275 of the Criminal Code ('High Treason') and in October of the same year, he was charged under Article 284.1 of the Criminal Code for collaborating with the 'undesirable' Free Russia Foundation.

Kara-Murza pleaded not guilty to all of the charges and considers his prosecution politically motivated.
