The Palestinian Civil Defence says rescuers recovered 12 bodies from the rubble of Mustafa Hafez school in Gaza City as rescue operations at the site continue, following an Israeli airstrike on Tuesday.

Footage shows the scene of destruction at the school, as rescuers, locals and Civil Defence crews retrieve a body from beneath the rubble, as grieving family members watch on.

“Today they gave us bread. While we were having our breakfast, we heard an explosion. There was no warning or anything,” explained Iman al-Fayoumi, a displaced woman living at Mustafa Hafez refugee school.

“We ran and screamed, cried with our children,” she added. “They are pulling out bodies of children and an old woman, are they armed? Are they holding weapons?” she asked.

“There are only women and children here. The [Israeli] occupation provides lame excuses that Hamas members were hiding inside refugee schools; these are lies. Hamas fighters are waiting to fight them, but we are the ones that pay the price. There are only children, women, the elderly and the sick here,” explained Shaimaa al-Fayoumi.

A member of the Civil Defence explained the difficulty faced recovering all of the dead and wounded, given the ‘difficult conditions’.

“We need heavy machinery such as excavators and bulldozers, but these are unavailable in Gaza, so some of those trapped under the rubble will be left there because unfortunately, we cannot retrieve them,” he noted.

The Palestinian News and Information Agency (WAFA) reported on Tuesday that ‘occupation warplanes bombed Mustafa Hafez School, which was sheltering displaced people in the Rimal neighbourhood west of the city, killing ten and injuring dozens.’

Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adrai confirmed the strike via Telegram. He said the Israeli Air Force had carried out a precision strike based on intelligence about a group of ‘saboteurs’ in a ‘command and control complex that was established and hidden’ in the school. Adrai claimed ‘a series of measures’ had been taken to ‘minimise the likelihood of civilian casualties’, including ‘the use of precision weapons, reliance on aerial imagery’ and ‘additional intelligence’.

Fighting in Gaza has been ongoing for over 10 months. On October 7, Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

Israel launched a large-scale response of airstrikes and a ground incursion. Palestinian officials reported that 40,099 people had been killed and more than 92,609 injured at the time of publication.
