Description

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh stated that the temporary shutdown of the Bushehr nuclear power plant was due to a 'technical defect,' at a press conference in Tehran on Monday.

"It is very common to do these technical inspections once, twice, or three times a year in nuclear power plants. It is not a special issue," Khatibzadeh stressed, and explained that the plant would "be out of operation for a few days."

The Bushehr plant is Iran's sole functioning nuclear facility with the Russian completed facility coming online in 2011.

Speaking about Europe's role in the Iran nuclear deal negotiations, Khatibzadeh said: "Europe is still in total inaction and is waiting to see what happens in Vienna so that it can even fulfil some of its commitments. As I said, as has been said before, we will not allow negotiations to erode."

Criticising attempts by Israeli media organisations to "misrepresent the image of the Islamic Republic of Iran abroad," Khatibzadeh spoke highly of President-elect Ebrahim Raisi.

"Mr Raisi has held various positions for many years. He took part of the system's decisions in the Supreme National Security Council. A part of the wise voice of the system belongs to him," said the spokesperson adding: "Everyone will soon see in what direction the supreme policies of the Islamic Republic of Iran will continue, as always principled and interactive."

The last meeting of the 6th round of the Joint Commission meeting of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was held in Vienna on Sunday, one day after conservative cleric Raisi was announced as the winner of the Iranian presidential election.
