US Vice President Kamala Harris praised President Joe Biden's 'legacy of accomplishment' during her remarks at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championship teams' event in Washington DC on Monday.

She added that Biden's achievements over the past three years is 'unmatched in modern history', saying it "has already surpassed the legacy of most presidents who have served two terms in office."

"I am a first hand witness that everyday, our President Joe Biden fights for the American people and we are deeply grateful for his service to our nation," she said.

Harris also mentioned that Biden is 'feeling much better' and 'recovering fast' as concerns over his health have been raised after an announcement on Thursday stated that he contracted COVID during a Latino rights conference. The president also posted 'I'm sick' on his X social media account in admission.

Biden's cognitive abilities have seen huge media scrutiny, which intensified following a much-criticised debate performance with Donald Trump and led to a number of Democratic representatives publicly calling on him to step aside.

The president has since announced on Sunday that he would not be seeking re-election in a social media post stating: "While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term."

Following Biden’s statement, Harris announced her intention to become the candidate of the Democratic Party.

The US presidential election is scheduled for November 5. On July 15, the Republican Party convention nominated former White House Head of State Donald Trump.
