The people of Istanbul and Izmir observed a minute of silence signalled by the wail of sirens at 9:05 a.m local time (06:05 GMT) to commemorate the 86th anniversary of the death of the founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.  

Footage captures the residents observing the silence before singing the Turkish national anthem at the Ataturk Monument in Izmir. Residents of Istanbul can also be seen sharing the minute of silence as the wail of sirens echoed across the city.  

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and other Turkish officials attended an official ceremony on the 86th anniversary of the passing of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the Republic on Sunday, according to Anadolu Agency. 

The outlet added that the ceremony kicked off with a procession led by Erdogan along the 'Lion's Path' at Ataturk's mausoleum complex in Ankara. 

Every year, special commemorative ceremonies are held throughout the country on November 10 to pay tribute to Ataturk who died in 1938. 

During the Turkish war of independence, Ataturk led the Turkish National Movement, culminating in the establishment of the Republic under his leadership in 1923.
