Beijing residents said that US Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan had actually put their country in a stronger position, despite the heightened tensions, as seen in footage on Wednesday.

"We can morally occupy a commanding point, which is conducive to our next actions, including the restoration of the reunification of the motherland," said one local resident, Mr Chai.

"I believe that when Taiwan is handed over in the future, China will handle it very well," he continued. "Because Hong Kong and Macao are good examples…China’s 'one country, two systems’ method can govern Taiwan well.”

Another local, Miss Feng, believed that other countries like the US should not interfere.

"I was really angry honestly (over Pelosi’s visit). I believe our country will have a better solution in the future. China’s territory is inviolable, and I think this is the idea of everyone around me," she explained.

Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taipei came despite strong objections from Beijing, who summoned the US ambassador on Wednesday. China announced a series of military drills around Taiwan, while the US also increased its military presence, moving aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan closer to the island’s waters.
