Description

Philippine arms manufacturer Armscor Global Defense Inc. (AGDI) launched weapons brand Rock Island Armory (RIA) Defense in Marikina on Tuesday with the goal of supplying local military and law enforcement personnel.

Footage shows a RD4P Cobra short-stroke gas piston rifle and a multi-calibre pistol named RD1 in action. RIA's .22 TCM bullet, a proprietary bottle-necked rimless cartridge, was also seen penetrating a bullet-proof vest after a demonstration.

As part of a new product line the assault rifle was tailor-fitted to the needs of Filipino law enforcement officers while the pistol will be available for commercial sale.

RIA Brand Manager Daniel Tuason claimed that the .22 TCM bullet can penetrate a level 3 body armour, saying that "there’s no pistol cartridge in the world right now that can do that, not any other brand."

"The fantastic part of this is you can change the barrel and the spring, it uses the same magazine," he added.

Tuason also noted that the brand’s RD4P Cobra has 'beach capability', meaning "it can shoot one magazine underwater and while you’re coming out of the water."

Meanwhile, AGDI Chairman, President and CEO Martin Tuason stated that the brand aims to allocate weapons locally to its armed forces, police and coast guard.

"We do have a vibrant US market. We export around 150,000 firearms a year to the United States, on good years, we exported 250,000 depending on the market demand of the US," he added.

AGDI is the leading defence manufacturer in the Philippines and one of the largest in Southeast Asia.

The company has been vocal in supporting the self-reliant defence posture (SRDP) programme that seeks to develop a local defence industry in the Philippines to lessen foreign dependence on weapons capabilities, alleging that apart from commercial reasons, foreign firearms often don't fit local requirements and Filipino physique, among other factors.
