Speaking at his annual press conference on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin admitted that he and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan often have differing views, but said the Turkish leader was a man of his word.
“If he thinks that something is beneficial for his country, he goes till the end. And this is the element of predictability. It is very important to understand who you are dealing with,” Putin said, responding to a question on working with world leaders.
Going on to talk about the work on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, the Russian leader said the project was “advantageous and beneficial for the economy of Europe as a whole and Germany in particular.”
The construction of the gas pipeline was suspended last year due to US sanctions, and Putin expressed hope that the upcoming administration in Washington will “treat its partners, its allies with understanding, respect, and it will not insist that they neglect their national interests, and will return to the regime of fair competition in world markets."
Putin’s annual end-of-year news conference is carried out in online format this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
