Description

Torrential rains, flooding and mudslides have devastated buildings and trapped thousands in northern Italy's city of Cogne on Saturday.

Footage capturing the aftermath on Monday shows the damaged buildings, piles of debris and the overflowing river. Footage also shows a rescue helicopter delivering affected evacuees to a safe zone.

"It's a disaster up here, a complete mess," one of the evacuees said. "It rained all day yesterday and all night long, we saw cars being swept away by the water. I was on vacation, we were supposed to leave tomorrow, but we were right where the river flooded. It was terrible."

Some of Cogne's roads were reportedly closed and several of the city's electricity grids and telephone communications were temporarily interrupted during the heavy rainfall. Since Saturday approximately ten centimetres of rainfall have been reported in Aosta Valley.

According to local media, the Valtournenche regional main road has been blocked by landslides, leaving approximately 1,300 people trapped by land across several cities, villages and a local resort.

Officials stated that the Gran Paradiso, Canavese and Macugnaga areas as well as the Orco and Lanzo valleys experienced most of the serious damage.
