Description

A sculpture named 'Mount Recyclemore' was unveiled on Thursday in Cornwall an e-waste awareness message for G7 (Group of 7) leaders and the global public.

In an environmentally-conscious twist to the iconic Mount Rushmore sculpture, the e-waste artwork depicts G7 leaders including UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel and US President Joe Biden.

The unveiling of the sculpture, which was commissioned by online retailer MusicMagpie, was timed to coincide with the 47th G7 summit that's being hosted by the UK.

"We commissioned a survey and four out of five Britons didn't even understand what e-waste was, didn't really understand the availability of solutions and recycling services, and doing something good with their old e-waste rather than just throwing in the drawer or it ultimately ending up in landfill so it seemed a really great time, with the G7 conference just happening along the bay there, to raise awareness of the whole issue of global e-waste," explained Steve Oliver, CEO of MusicMagpie.

"It's not that we stay away from politics but we're not interested in national politics, because the whole waste problem is not about national politics, it's about global politics," said Joe Rush, a sculptor worked on the project.

Rush also expressed concern for minerals running out and called for more environmentally conscious recycling and product design solutions.

According to the UN's Global E-waste Monitor 2020 report, an alarming increase of 21 percent was observed in the production of e-waste during a five period between 2015 and 2019, with Europe ranking as the world's biggest generator of e-waste.
