Syrian President Bashar al-Assad performed Eid al-Adha prayers at al-Rawda Mosque in Damascus on Sunday.

Footage shows Assad praying at the mosque with several officials and clerics, as well as exchanging greetings with worshippers.

"These days are Ibrahim's days; days of affliction, patience, and sacrifice. Oh God, we ask you to give us strength after the affliction that the nation has experienced," said Mohammed al-Sawaf, the General Supervisor of the Sheikh Ahmed Kuftaro Complex, who delivered the Eid sermon.

"Affliction is the prophets' school, and the greatest lesson is patience, which is the greatest virtue that the Messenger of Allah was ordered to adhere to in many verses," he added.

Awqaf Minister Mohammed al-Sayed, several high-ranking state and party officials (the ruling Baath Party), Islamic scholars, and several citizens prayed alongside Assad, according to the state news agency of Syria, SANA.

Eid al-Adha is the second of two globally celebrated holidays in Islam, the other Eid al-Fitr, with the former honouring Ibrahim or Abraham's will to sacrifice his son to God before Jibra'il or Gabriel's intervention. Animals are often sacrificed on the holiday to remember Ibrahim's offering.
