Israeli lawmakers in the Knesset have overwhelmingly voted against the recognition of a Palestinian state 'unilaterally', backing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government's declaration against the recognition, in Wednesday session that saw the expulsion of Arab lawmaker Ahmed Tibi.

The vote comes as Washington is reportedly considering policy options on recognising a Palestinian state after the war in Gaza.

"The people of Israel and their elected representatives are united today as never done. The Knesset voted overwhelmingly to oppose any attempt to unilaterally impose a Palestinian state on Israel. Such an attempt will only endanger and prevent the genuine peace we all seek," Netanyahu declared.

He added that peace could only be accomplished 'through direct negotiations, without preconditions.'

Later, a debate erupted between Tibi and Israel's radical national defence minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, that ended up expelling Tibi from the parliament hall.

According to Israeli media, 99 out of 120 Knesset members voted in favour of the Netanyahu government's declaration approved earlier this week.

Israel's opposition leader, Yair Lapid, voted in favour of the resolution but assured that he did not believe there was a U.S. intention to unilaterally recognise a Palestinian state.

Netanyahu indicated that no proposal submitted to the Knesset had previously received such an overwhelming majority.
