Description

At least 11 people have died and thousands have been forced to leave their homes due to heavy floods caused by torrential rainfall in the city of Agartala, located in India's Tripura state.

Footage recorded on Thursday, including aerial shots, shows the flooded streets with some homes and commercial properties almost completely submerged. Some locals can be seen braving the waterlogged streets in cars and by motorbike, while in the hardest-hit areas people wade through the water and are evacuated and transported by boat.

Locals shared their thoughts on the disastrous flooding, noting that rainfall this heavy is not unprecedented during India's monsoon season.

"The entire area is under water. Everyone is suffering so much. The government is helping and doing what they can," said local Subrotho.

"It was like this in '93. 31 years later we are again seeing such massive floods," noted local Debhanshu, adding that "Rescue works are going on, and everyone is now in schools and colleges in temporary shelters," he explained.

"There are around 700 to 800 houses here, they are all submerged in flood water. People are having a tough time here, it is a problem to find food and water. The markets and bazaars are all shut," Debhanshu concluded.

According to local media reports, approximately 34,100 people had to leave their homes due to the floods, who are being housed in 346 relief camps across the state.
