Pakistan authorities has scaled up persuasion measures to curb growing mpox outbreak as the fourth case was reported in the country.

Footage filmed on Sunday shows two mpox-infected people wearing face masks lying on beds in the quarantine room at Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Hospital in Peshawar. A doctor can also be seen examining blood samples from patients after sterlilising his hands.

The fourth mpox case in Pakistan was reported in Peshawar on Sunday, when the Ministry of Health announced that a 47-year-old man had tested positive after being quarantined by Border Health Services.

"Once the patient is diagnosed then the time period is the most important issue and in two to three weeks the patient will recover, right?" Dr. Mujib Rahman said.

"We have tried our best to keep them isolated so one patient must not be affected by the second one. We have special SOPs for their relatives when they visit them," Doctor Altaf Hussain continued.

On August 16, Pakistan's health ministry reportedly confirmed one case of the mpox virus in Khyber Pakhtunkwa province.

In August, the World Health Organization President Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has declared mpox a 'public health emergency' of international concern due to its rapid outbreak in eastern DRC and other parts of Africa. This category used in the past for Ebola outbreaks, Covid-19 and a 2022 mpox surge in Europe.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said mpox has been detected in 13 countries this year, with more than 96 percent of all cases and deaths are in the Democratic Republic of Congo. There have been more than 14,000 cases and 524 fatalities in the country alone this year while 38,465 cases has been reported across Africa since January 2022.

The mpox virus is transmitted to humans through close contact with an infected person or animal and by touching contaminated objects, such as bedding, clothing as well as needles.

The mpox symptoms are flu-like symptoms and it leads to rashes. Its transmission can happen through close contact with infected people or animals. Vaccines are usually available for those at risk or in close contact with confirmed cases.
