Palestinian artist Nader Asmar has introduced his latest collection, 'Palestine Olympics,' which artistically merges elements of Palestinian life with sports. This exhibition coincides with the ongoing Summer Olympics in Paris.
Footage filmed on Saturday from Asmar's studio in Ramallah showcases his workspace, brimming with a variety of artworks. The collection features both digitally altered art and traditional paintings on paper. One notable piece portrays a Palestinian boy being detained by Israeli soldiers, resembling a boxing match. Another depicts a Palestinian man scaling the separation wall, evoking an Olympic hurdling event. In a different artwork, a young Palestinian is shown diving from the walls of Acre, representing an Olympic diving competition.
“Had the number of fences and hurdles we jumped over been counted, we, as Palestinian people, would have qualified for the Olympic Games,” Asmar commented, drawing a comparison between the daily adversities faced by Palestinians and the challenges of Olympic athletes. “Our challenges occur daily, while those of the Olympics happen every four years,” he added.
Mohammed Khalil, a fellow visual artist, highlighted the importance of Asmar's work, pointing out its potential to gain widespread attention on social media platforms like Facebook and TikTok, thereby raising awareness and stimulating global conversations.
