Description

Police detained nine supporters of the opposition figure Alexei Navalny outside his penal colony east of Moscow, as the regional department of Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs stated on Tuesday.

According to the official report, about 45 protesters gathered near the penal colony. The detained Navalny’s supporters were taken to the regional Department of Internal Affairs for further investigation.

As the Department of Information and Press of the Russian Foreign Ministry reports, police also detained CNN reporters, as well as Navalny’s personal doctor Anastasia Vasilieva.

"As representatives of the medical community, we understand the current condition of Alexei’s health better than the head of the colony. So, our plan [is to] talk to the head of the colony and his doctor, after that to find a decision for providing [medical] assistance, so that Alexei could stop his hunger strike, as it harms his health," Vasilieva said.

She expressed her support for Navalny’s hunger strike, as he has "no other leverage," adding that the opposition leader may have tuberculosis or a coronavirus infection.

Navalny spent nearly five months recovering in Germany from an alleged Novichok nerve agent attack. After returning to Russia in January, he was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison for violating parole conditions for a 2014 embezzlement conviction.
