Description

More than 1.8 million pilgrims gathered on Mount Arafat, near Mecca on Saturday to perform the ‘great pillar of Hajj’ on Arafat day, considered the holiest day of Hajj.

Footage shows pilgrims standing on Mount Arafat, known as the hill of mercy, where they pray for forgiveness and recite from the Quran.

Saudi Minister of Hajj and Umrah Tawfiq al-Rabiah announced that 1,833,164 pilgrims marked this year's Hajj, adding that "the plans to transport pilgrims from Mecca and Mina to Arafat have been successful".

As the sun sets, the pilgrims move to the open plain of Muzdalifah to perform special prayers and collect the pebbles they will cast at the walls in an important ritual at Mina.

Dawn on Sunday marks the start of Eid al-Adha, the Feast of Sacrifice, which lasts for four days.
