Description

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Lin Jian slammed the US for keeping its missile system deployment to the Philippines during a press conference in Beijing on Thursday.

"The deployment is a move to turn back the wheel of history. It gravely threatens regional countries’ security, incites geopolitical confrontation, and has aroused high vigilance and concerns of countries in the region," he said.

The spokesperson also urged the 'relevant country' to "correct the wrongdoing as soon as possible, stop inciting military confrontation, quickly pull out the missile system as publicly pledged, and avoid going further down the wrong path."

These remarks come after the US stated that it will keep its Typhon system in the Philippines despite Manila's ongoing territorial disputes with Beijing at the South China Sea. The missile system is reported to be equipped with cruise missiles and capable of striking Chinese targets.

Tensions continue to escalate between Beijing and Manila in the South China Sea. In July, the countries' coastguards and navies had several clashes in the disputed waters, while Japan also disputed ownership of the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands with China.

China asserts control over a large part of the South China Sea, while Southeast Asian nations including the Philippines also claim parts of the area, including Ren'ai Reef/Second Thomas Shoal.

Furthermore, Lin also criticised US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell for stating that challenges to the US posed by China were exceeding those of the Cold War.

"They are steeped in Cold-War and zero-sum mentality and ideological bias," he said. "The US has viewed the international landscape and identified China-US relations from the perspective of strategic competition, and wrongfully seen China as the top challenge."

The spokesperson added that the statement was a 'serious misjudgment' of China and its relations with the US, saying that it "does not serve the fundamental interests of the two peoples, or meet the extensive aspiration of the international community."

Campbell argued during a US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on Wednesday that foreign crises, including Russia's war in Ukraine and the Israel-Gaza conflict, have created distractions for US President Joe Biden's administration to focus on China and the Indo-Pacific region, according to media reports.

Meanwhile, China stated their concerns on rising tensions in the Middle East after 20 were killed and hundreds injured due to exploding devices in Lebanon on Tuesday and Wednesday.

"China is following closely the relevant incident. We oppose any act that infringes on Lebanon’s sovereignty and security and express concerns over possible escalation of tensions in the region that this incident might trigger," Lin said.

The spokesperson further noted that ending the 'occupation' in Gaza is 'not a choice but an obligation', adding that implementing the two-state solution "is the only viable way to resolve the question of Palestine."

"Relevant parties, especially Israel, need to earnestly implement the relevant resolutions of the Security Council and the General Assembly, cease the military operations in Gaza without delay, and stop the illegal settlement activities in the West Bank," he added.

During the press conference, Lin also confirmed the death of a Japanese schoolboy in Shenzhen after being stabbed by a local man. He announced that China will handle the funeral affairs for his family and provide necessary assistance as investigation on the cause of the incident remains ongoing.
