Description

The Petushinski district court dismissed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny’s request to overturn his designation as a flight risk, on Wednesday.

"The court decided to dismiss the administrative claim of Alexei Anatolyevich Navalny to FKU IK-2 of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia in the Vladimir Region on recognising the commission's decision of March 11, 2021 on recording him as a person prone to escape, actions to deprive the right for continuous eight-hour sleep illegal and the elimination of the violations committed," stated Judge Galina Nikulova.

Navalny had asked for an end to hourly nighttime checks, arguing that there was no basis for assigning him a flight risk status.

Navalny’s lawyer Vadim Kobzev informed journalists that the defence team would appeal against the court decision.

In February of this year, the court sentenced Navalny to three and a half years in a penal colony for violating probation terms. Navalny's defence considers the court's decision illegitimate.

On March 31, the opposition leader said through his social network account that he was on a hunger strike and demanded that an 'external physician' be allowed to visit him in the colony. According to the lawyer of the opposition leader, his leg and back hurt. On April 15, Navalny's doctors published their letter to the director of the Federal Penitentiary Service, in which they expressed "extreme concern about his [Navalny's] condition, which is approaching critical."

The Federal Penitentiary Service noted that Navalny's health, according to the results of the survey, is assessed as satisfactory and stable, and also stated that in the colony he receives all the necessary assistance.
