Description

Thousands of protestors took to the streets across Indian-administered Kashmir on Friday to condemn Israel's assassination of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah in Lebanon.

Footage shows the streets of Kashmir flooded by a sea of yellow Hezbollah flags as demonstrators chant against Israel's ongoing operations in Gaza and Lebanon. Protesters are seen carrying large portraits of Nasrallah and former Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani, who was killed in a US strike in Baghdad.

"This protest is in support of the oppressed people of Lebanon and Hezbollah," one local said as he joined the demonstration after Friday prayer service.

Hundreds of police officers have been deployed to maintain order in Shia-majority localities amid ongoing anti-Israel rallies.

The solidarity demonstrations continue unabated despite the criminalisation of pro-Palestine protests by authorities, particularly since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist government stripped Kashmir of its semi-autonomous status in 2019.

"We are holding this protest against oppression, wherever it occurs in the world, we raise our voices. Whether it is against Sunnis or Shias, we must raise our voice; it is our duty," another protester said.

Anger swept across the region following the killing of Nasrallah in a Beirut airstrike, while prominent Kashmiri politicians expressed grief over the assassination. Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti cancelled a campaign event on Sunday, stating that she stands "with the people of Palestine and Lebanon in this hour of immense grief."

Nasrallah's death has revived concerns about a wider regional war that Israel's Western allies have been scrambling to avoid. Iran launched a barrage of missiles at Israel on Tuesday evening, just hours after Israeli forces moved into southern Lebanon to eliminate 'Hezbollah terror targets.'

The ground invasion comes after Israel dismissed calls by the US and France for a 21-day ceasefire in Lebanon. More than one million people have been forced to leave their homes in what Prime Minister Najib Mikati called the 'largest displacement movement' in Lebanese history.

Hezbollah, Lebanese, and Palestinian factions have been exchanging cross-border shelling with Israeli forces since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.
