Description

Thousands of Muslims flocked to the stadium in Addis Ababa to mark the celebration of the 1445th Eid al-Adha with prayers on Sunday.

Footage shows worshippers filling the pitch of the Addis stadium as they collectively pray the special prayers of the Islamic holiday. Ethiopian Finance Minister Ahmed Shide was also seen arriving at the stadium to celebrate Eid al-Adha with fellow worshippers.

"I need peace for our country, Ethiopia. I wish for peace for all Muslim brothers and sisters in the world. Eid Mubarak," a worshipper said.

"For all that are present in the world with peace and love marking the 1445th Eid Al-Adha holiday. I wish peace for Muslims all over the world and in Palestine. For those who influenced Muslims, I will pray to Allah to receive peace," another said.

Eid al-Adha (Festival of Sacrifice), is one of the two major Islamic festivals. It commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God, before God provided a ram to sacrifice instead.

Traditionally, Muslims around the world celebrate by sacrificing an animal and distributing the meat among family, friends and the needy. This festival also marks the end of the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.
