Chief of General Staff of the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) Herzl Halevi, announced that the organisation was nearing the point where it can declare, 'we have dismantled the Rafah Brigade', during an assessment of the situation with military commanders in Gaza on Monday.

"It is defeated not in the sense that there are no more terrorists, but in the sense that it can no longer function as a fighting unit," Halevi said. "It has suffered many casualties, and you will ensure until the completion of the mission here, to eliminate as many terrorists and destroy as much terrorist infrastructure as possible in the future".

"This is reflected in the amount of terrorists that have been eliminated, as well as the infrastructure destroyed, the underground tunnel routes, its mapping, its destruction, and the progress in the complex underground combat," he explained. "The fact that the 162nd Division now controls the Philadelphia Corridor from the sea to the border between Israel, Gaza, and Egypt, is very significant in cutting off Hamas' supply for future smuggling. We are now dealing with the underground assets".

He also paid tribute to the IDF's efforts in Rafah, highlighting the strategic gains made in dismantling Hamas's infrastructure.

"With great appreciation, what is happening here is very impressive professionally, keep it up," he said.

Fighting continues for the ninth month in Gaza after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200 according to Israeli officials.

Israel declared war on the group and a 'complete siege' of Gaza, with a large-scale campaign of air strikes. A ground incursion began at the end of the third week, with Israeli leaders vowing to 'wipe out' Hamas. Palestinian officials reported that at least 37,626 people had been killed and more than 86,098 injured at time of publication.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) claimed that Hamas locations and infrastructure were targeted in the response. However, United Nations experts warned against 'collective punishment' for the people of Gaza, before predicting a 'humanitarian crisis' and then claimed that 'hell is settling in' for the region.
