Description

Dozens of pro-Palestinian people were seen outside Wimbledon in London on Monday, protesting against the sponsorship of British bank Barclays, which the demonstrators accuse of funding arms companies that supply weapons to Israel in its ongoing war against Hamas.

"We hope that Wimbledon's organisers will listen to this protest and also listen to thousands of people that have written to Wimbledon's organisers and told them to drop Barclays,” stated Lewis Backon, one of the protesters.

Footage shows the demonstrators waving Palestinian flags and holding banners as well as signs, such as 'Barclays serves Israel's genocide' and 'Barclays complicit in genocide'. A large yellow tennis ball is also seen with the words 'Barclays sponsors Wimbledon & genocide'.

"Barclays provides financing worth billions of pounds to arms companies, supplying the weapons and military technology that Israel is using in its genocidal work against Palestinians in Gaza," Backon claimed.

According to local media reports, the bank owns shares worth over £2 billion and has provided £6.1 billion in loans and guarantees to at least nine companies supplying arms and military technology to Israel.

Meanwhile, the bank writes on its official website that it recognises the 'profound human suffering' caused by the conflict and urges governments and the international community to find a peaceful solution.

The Israel-Hamas war has been ongoing since October 7, when the militant group launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel, killing 1,139 people according to the Israeli side.

The Israeli army launched a large-scale campaign of air strikes and ground incursions, with at least 37,000 people killed and over 86,000 injured according to the Palestinian side at the time of publication.
