Several people were killed and wounded in an Israeli airstrike on a school sheltering displaced individuals in Gaza City's Sheikh Radwan neighbourhood on Saturday. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed that the strike targeted a Hamas command and control centre located within the school.

Footage shows injured and deceased individuals being evacuated from Hamama School, while civil defence teams struggled to extinguish the flames engulfing the area.

The official Palestinian news agency, Wafa, reported that the death toll from the airstrikes on Hamama School and the nearby Huda School has risen to 17, including women and children, with 16 others wounded.

"After receiving a distress signal from citizens, we immediately went to the site, where we found a number of martyrs and retrieved several of them,” explained Rami Dabash, a member of the civil defence rescue team.

“During the work, an intelligence officer or the occupation forces, in general, contacted the citizens, [instructing them] to evacuate the area because it would be targeted again, [as they were told] to leave everything behind, which forced us to leave some of the martyrs and the wounded to ensure the safety of the crews in the field," he added.

Fighting between Israel and Hamas in Gaza broke out after the Palestinian group launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200 civilians, according to Israeli officials.

In Gaza, the Israeli army launched a large-scale campaign of airstrikes and ground incursion, killing at least 39,000 Palestinians and injuring more than 91,000 since October 7.
