Description

Iranian sitting volleyball player and the world’s second-tallest man, Morteza Mehrzad Selakjani, is the tallest athlete ever to compete in the Paralympic Games. He was seen practicing with his team in Tehran on Tuesday.

Towering over his teammates at 2.46m (8ft 1in), Mehrzad, as he is known, has been impressive on the court, making an already strong Iranian team even better.

Morteza Mehrzad Selakjani was born in September 1987 and was neither taller than other babies nor did he show any signs of a disease in his appearance, but years later he rapidly grew and soon became taller than his classmates.

One day he suffered from severe back pain and examinations showed that he had problems in the joints and pelvis and underwent surgery what left him with one leg 10cm shorter than the other.

Mehrzad helped Iran return to the top of the Paralympic podium at the Rio 2016 games after eight years following a 3-1 victory over defending champs Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was the competition’s second-best spiker as Iran won their sixth Paralympic gold in the last eight games.

Morteza and the Iranian Paralympic team look to take the gold in Tokyo at the 2021 Paralympic Games set to begin August 24.
