03:31Thousands of locals and tourists flocked to the streets of Pingtang, Guizhou Province, on Saturday to enjoy the traditional Water Dragon Festival and its captivating performances.
"After I came here, I found the atmosphere is very great," said Mr Wang, a tourist. "Both the elderly and the children are interacting with performers here".
Footage shows performers in traditional costumes marching and dancing with papier-mâché dragons with waving tails, and vehicles spray water on the participants, some of whom wear raincoats. Festival-goers can also be seen in dragon boats on the river.
"I know this Water Dragon Festival from my sister and also some knowledge from the textbook," shared Miss Yang, another tourist. "When I was playing today, I felt that everyone was very enthusiastic. Whether they are adults or children, they all have a good time. There's nothing embarrassing about it".
"What impressed me was that I would meet police, and the children would rush up and fight water battles with them," she added.
The 9th Water Dragon Festival, entitled 'Meet in Pingtang, Enjoy the Water Dragon Carnival', was held from 6 to 8 July. The event included a water splash carnival with performances, a dragon boat competition, various cultural and artistic activities and a night show, according to local media reports.
Celebrated since the Ming Dynasty, the festival was designated as part of Guizhou Province's intangible cultural heritage in 2019. Each year, participants use basins, buckets and water pistols to splash water for a safe and smooth year.
