Description

The new Iranian consulate building in the Syrian capital of Damascus was inaugurated on Monday, after the previous one was destroyed in an alleged Israeli strike last week.

Footage shows both Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and his Syrian counterpart Faisal Mekdad inspecting the destruction before heading to the new building, conducting the official opening and taking a tour inside.

According to the Iran's official news agency, the two ministers met earlier to discuss bilateral co-operation, particularly economic relations, while Amir-Abdollahian also spoke with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad about support for the Palestinian people among other issues.

Assad himself accused Israel of 'unprecedented brutality' in Gaza and said that the attempt to 'crush the Palestinian resistance' will 'never succeed'.

Over a dozen people were reported killed including seven IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) members, following the strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus on April 1.

Israel did not admit responsibility, although a spokesperson claimed that the target was a 'military building of Quds forces', referring to a division of the IRGC.

The Iranian foreign minister began a regional tour on Sunday, where he met with several Omani officials and Mohammed Abdulsalam, the Houthi envoy, in Oman.

Fighting in Gaza continues just over six months after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials. Iran subsequently praised the attack but denied involvement.

Israel declared war on the group and a 'complete siege' of Gaza, with a large-scale campaign of air strikes. A ground incursion began at the end of the third week, with Israeli leaders vowing to 'wipe out' Hamas. Palestinian officials reported that at least 33,000 had been killed at time of publication.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) claimed that Hamas locations and infrastructure were targeted in the response. However, United Nations experts warned against 'collective punishment' for the people of Gaza, before predicting a 'humanitarian crisis' and then claimed that 'hell is settling in' for the region.
