China offered to provide COVID vaccines to the athletes participating in the Tokyo Olympics 2021 and the Beijing Winter Games 2022, Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) spokesperson Zhao Lijian confirmed during a daily press conference held on Friday in Beijing.
"China firmly supports the international cooperation of vaccines," Lijian said, adding, "This is an act to implement President Xi Jinping's pledge to make the vaccine a global public good. We sincerely hope we can bring more confidence and hope to the global flight against the coronavirus."
As Thomas Bach, the president of the International Olympics Committee (IOC), announced on Thursday during a virtual meeting, China offered to provide vaccines for Tokyo Olympic athletes and IOC would take the relevant costs for the vaccines.
Lijian also said that the first high-level dialogue between Beijing and Washington since the Biden Administration took the office "was initiated by the US side," and cautioned the USA to stop meddling in China's affairs, including Hong Kong-related issues.
The meeting is set to take place in Anchorage, Alaska next Thursday.
