Description

A plant that manufactures olive oil containers has resumed operations almost a year after war broke out in Gaza. The production line at the facility is vital with the olive harvest approaching, which begins in October and runs until November.

Footage captured on Monday shows production underway in the plant located in the town of Zawaida in central Gaza, where 12 workers operate the plant machinery.

"We are able to operate here again as the olive harvesting season is approaching. All the people in Gaza eagerly await the olive oil season every year. therefore, we did our best to provide oil containers to the oil factories on time," Hamouda Ali al-Ashi, the plant owner explained.

“The Palestinian people cannot be uprooted, and whoever tries to do so shall fail.[...] We will keep on working and rebuilding as long as we can breathe. Economic steadfastness is as important as political,” he added.

Al-Ashi faced many challenges as he sought to reopen the plant. He was forced to recover machinery from under the debris and fix hardware damaged by falling cement blocks - a result of Israeli shelling.

He explained that some of the machinery in the plant was built using repaired parts collected from four damaged machines.

The ongoing siege on Gaza also forced plant employees to recover raw materials like bags from under the debris, washing and drying them for use.

Fighting continues for the 11th month after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200 according to Israeli officials. Israel declared war on the group and a 'complete siege' of Gaza, with a large-scale campaign of air strikes.

A ground incursion began at the end of the third week, with Israeli leaders vowing to 'wipe out' Hamas. Palestinian officials reported that at least 41,182 people had been killed and more than 95,280 injured at time of publication.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) claimed that Hamas locations and infrastructure were targeted in the response. However, United Nations experts warned against 'collective punishment' for the people of Gaza, before predicting a 'humanitarian crisis' and then claimed that 'hell is settling in' for the region.
